August Vollmer is a legendary figure who grew up in the orphanage and had only grade school education. He eventually became the Chief of Police at Berkeley, CA and taught at UC Berkeley. I can say that he was the only faculty member in the history of UC Berkeley with grade school education from the 1930s to 1950s. His influence in the police reform during the first half of 20th century in US was tremendous.
