Write an essay in response to one of the following three questions. Be as specific as possible in making your points. Also, try to show a range of knowledge from the course to this point.
1. Dwight MacDonald warned against the “spreading ooze of Mass Culture.” What did he mean? Why “ooze”? What does this tell us about critiques of mass culture in general? Can you relate MacDonald’s point to the history of popular culture in America?
2. How important is audience to our understanding of popular culture? Why? Please include historical as well as theoretical considerations in your reply.
3. Is popular culture a source of liberation or conformity? Include at least one historical example as well as a broader theoretical response.
