Possible Research Topics (Please choose one):
Japan’s early interactions with the Asian mainland
Japan and “Western imperialism”
Impacts (trade, politics, religion) of early contact with Europe
strengths or weaknesses of shogunal power
Comfort women and their role in Japanese imperialism
An exploration of Japanese justifications for their imperialism
The role of the emperor in Japanese imperialism
Your completed 1500 words paper should contain the following elements:
i. a title page:
a) which includes your name, the date, and course name; click here for a template;
b) clever/cutesy titles are acceptable, but you should also provide a sub-title that indicates what the paper is actually about;
c) title-pages do not carry a page number; pagination begins with the first page of your text;
ii. the body of your paper, double-spaced, with page-numbers indicated;
iii. endnotes (unless you prefer to use footnotes); and
iv. bibliography: alphabetized by author and in MLA format

Also include a Statement of Topic: This should give a tentative title for your paper and a few lines describing the problem you want to investigate, and then a list of your preliminary bibliography (in proper format). This list should make a clear distinction among:
i. books which you have already consulted;
ii. books which you have obtained but not yet consulted, and
iii. books which you have identified, but have not yet obtained or consulted.
