Each research paper will be at least two, but no more than four pages long and cover the claimed health benefits, literature, pharmaceutics (active component(s), potency definition, structure(s), chemical stability, storage, and analysis), mechanism of action, commercial sources, interactions, current and regulatory status relevant to support the use of the natural substance assigned (see the list of items to be covered at the end of the syllabus). Each research paper should be supported by reliable references, preferably derived from peer-reviewed literature, and should also be accompanied by up to 6-12 (no more than 15, including the title and concluding slides.

Here are two examples of what students have turned in for reports and PowerPoint slides for Milk Thistle and Mulberry Leaf. These are not perfect, but they can help guide you as to format. Several comments: The references are really not done in the format I would hope for, especially for the report on Mulberry Leaf. You should insert reference numbers in the body of the report that correspond to the source of the information. Also included is a brief report on zinc and SARS-CoV-2 infection that can serve as a better example of what I expect in terms of reference acknowledgements. Below, I am pasting the instructions from the syllabus:

The research paper should be supported by reliable references, preferably derived from peer-reviewed literature and should also be accompanied by up to 6-12 (no more than 15, including the title and concluding slides) PowerPoint slides that summarize the information in the research paper.
Following the first five weeks of the course, students will make in-class presentations that last for no more than 12 minutes followed by no more than a 3-minutes of in-class discussion. Most class periods will consist of six student presentations on selected topics. For each presentation made by students, there will be a written report (2-4 pages, single spaced) that summarizes the following information for the topic:
1. Claimed health benefits
2. Literature that supports or refutes these claims
3. For pure substances the structure, chemical stability, storage, and how the substance is characterized (e.g., drug analysis); for herbal products, extracts, or complex mixtures what the active components are thought to be and how potency is determined.
4. Likely mechanism of action for any therapeutic effect
5. Commercial sources
6. Potential nutraceutical-drug or nutraceutical-nutraceutical interactions
7. Current regulatory status and issues that are likely to affect this status in the future.
Electronic copies of these student reports (Word or pdf format) are due by the end of the 5th week class period. Students can substitute a different topic for the one assigned/selected, so long as it is not one of the other topics listed. Before making a substitution check with the course coordinator.
