The concept of managing work as a project network and building a schedule around this work was first introduced by Henry Gantt during World War I. He developed the Gantt chart and used it as a small scale graphical or visual aid to assist in complex multiple tasks jobs with machines in
Pert and CPM were first used by DuPont and Goodyear, but were made famous by the military use of the techniques in building large-scale weapons programs. It was first used in large scale by the U.S. Navy in the development of the Polaris Missile project in 1958 and is now used by all military services as well as large scale global corporations in the procurement and development of their projects.
