– But what about all the people that are connected with making those jeans? Do they work in safe working conditions? Are they paid fairly for their work by those companies? Does the company that sells those jeans have workers making them in countries with almost no environmental regulations? And about the company that seels those jeans, are they paying wokers well? What is their record on environmental and worker issues?
Because we are connected to all of those things by virute of buying those jeans, we are participating in the process that is either exploitative and oppressive and environmentally bad, or we are supporting a company that has a good environmental record and record of concern for worker well-being.
What if we discover our favorite jeans are made by a reprehensible company that shows an interest only in their profits? What do we do then? And in a world that is so thoroughly globalized, how far do we go to make sure we are not subsidizing the abuse & exploitation of foreign workers, and the despoilation of the environment of foreign countries related to the many, many things we buy? It’s a certainty that, through our consuming lives, we do subsidize realities that would probably horrify us. But what happens when we become more aware of that possibility and either make an effort to be more aware and responsible, or say “the heck with it, it’s too much to keep track of,” and we continue our usual consuming?
