Policy, systems and environmental (PSE) change is a way of modifying the environment to make healthy choices practical and available to all community members. By changing laws and shaping physical landscapes, a big impact can be made with little time and resources. By changing policies, systems and/or environments, communities can help tackle health issues like obesity, diabetes, cancer and other chronic diseases.
PSE change is a new way of thinking about how to effectively improve health in a community. For many years, health programs have focused on individual behavior, assuming that if you teach people what will make them healthy, they will find a way to do it. Unfortunately, being healthy is not just about individual choices.
For Assignment 2b, you will virtually “attend” a webinar presented by ChangeLab Solutions (Links to an external site.) and answer the following questions.
Question 1 (5 points): According to the webinar, what are the 8 essential elements of a strong prevention strategy?
Question 2 (10 points): Why are partnerships an important part of a PSE approach? How does what you learned in the webinar relate back to what you learned this week about community partnerships to improve public health?
Question 3 (10 points): How could a PSE approach be used to improve school health? How is the WSCC approach similar or different from a PSE approach?
Your response to these questions does not need to be long. I expect that a response to this assignment will be between 400-700 words. However, I do expect that your response should be well thought out, written in complete sentences, and should effectively address all parts of the prompt above.
