The World Making Assignment is designed for students to practice both critical media literacy
and showcase their creative writing skills. Students will choose one genre of Media (e.g.,
advertisement, movie, song, etc.) and close read its formal and stylistic elements, and present a
critical analysis on its purpose and design. Students should effectively offer a critique of the
piece, that is able to identify the various social, political economic power dynamics at play in
constructing the media narrative. In complementing their analysis, they will also be creating their
own version of this media text genre, with a similar commentary or same genre.
