What is the role of story-telling in this culture?

1. The story of Beowulf is interspersed with many digressions—stories of the past and future; what is the role of these embedded stories? What is the role of story-telling in this culture? Pick one such embedded story from the poem and explain what it is doing there.
2.Review the archetypal story pattern known as “The Hero’s Journey” (see image below); explain how Beowulf matches that story pattern. This pattern is found in many famous stories (literature and film); what other story do you recognize as depicting “The Hero’s Journey”? Why do you think we find this journey so compelling?
3. Through the recurrence of words and rituals, the poem reinforces the cultural value of order. In Beowulf, we are in a world in which custom, order, and ritual movement promised security while spontaneity and novelty were fraught with peril. Explain how the story illustrates that order is good while chaos is evil. Is this battle between order and chaos a feature of all monster stories?
