Discuss the authors’ suggestions for researching the “music-movement link.”

To complete the first reading response essay, you must read Chapter 1 from the
required eBook (available in Blackboard). The reading is listed below in MLA citation
format for your reference:
• Rosenthal, Rob and Flacks, Richard. “Chapter 1: You Can’t Scare Me, I’m
Sticking to the Union.” Playing for Change: Music and Musicians in the Service of
Social Movements. Routledge, 2016. pp. 3-36.
Your assignment is to write a 400-word response paper (~1.5-2 pages) focusing on
the selected chapter. Please do not make this a chapter summary. Instead, you should
think about and analyze what you read. You must refer to specific page numbers and/or
very brief quotes in your response to demonstrate engagement with and an
understanding of the material. You are encouraged to write using first-person
perspective, but please be sure to use academic prose (avoid using contractions, etc.).
You must use MLA format* for citing page numbers or quotes from the readings. You
may choose to consider some or all of the following issues in your response paper:
• Your thoughts about the authors’ definition and description of social movements
and music’s social effects.
• Your thoughts about the link or relationship between specific music genres and
social movements (folk, popular, rock, etc.).
• Discuss the authors’ suggestions for researching the “music-movement link”
• Questions you may wish to discuss or comparisons you may want to make
based on your own experiences with social movements and/or political music.
• Your reaction and reflection to any other specific issues or topics addressed in
the chapter including artist intent and audience reception, for example.
• Pages 32-36 do not require a response in your essay, but we will be referring to
some of the people listed here throughout the semester so you should become
familiar with them.
The purpose of this assignment is to encourage you to think and write critically
about the assigned chapter and the issues addressed in it. Please do not simply write a
summary of the chapter.
