Objective: Distinguish between quantitative and qualitative research
Respond to the following questions based upon the type of health topic or practice problem presented in a quantitative or qualitative research article which is attached.[PDF]
Discuss the significance of research in managing this health topic or problem.
Does the research article present a well-known health care issue, or present a new way to examine a known issue, or present an entirely new area of interest?
Do the findings from the article contribute primarily to nursing theory, nursing practice, or general nursing knowledge? Defend and support your answer with material from the article.
Please be sure to validate your opinions and ideas with citations and references in APA format.
The post and responses are valued at 20 points. Please review post and response expectations. Please review the rubric to ensure that your response meets criteria.

After reviewing the article attached, I was able to distinguish whether this research had the objective of qualitative versus quantitative work. I distinguished this research as being a quantitative study. This study showcased how different measurable variables such as appetite, health status, depressive symptoms and demographics can all impact the overall health status of a patient in heart failure. The significance of this research is related to how can the quality of life can be improved for patients who are dealing with a chronic condition such as heart failure. Managing these patients does not only correlate to health maintenance of the patients heart function or cardiovascular system, but extends to maintenance of factors such as mental health and nutrition.
This research showcased a well known health care issue that is heart failure in a new way. In the United States, nearly 6.2 million adults have a diagnosis of heart failure (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020). Taking a well known disease such as heart failure and looking at quantitative measures that can highlight how appetite can affect the quality of life, presents this new way of examining heart disease.
The findings in this article mainly contribute to nursing practice. The study was done by collecting information through a survey that was completed by different patients in the clinical setting. The patients that were met to survey were consistent throughout the study and were first met in a hospital setting and then in a home setting. Informed consent was taken place as nurses with clinical experience taking care of patients with heart failure aided in conducting the survey and collection of research data (Andreae et al., p. E16, 2018). It is really interesting to collect data on heavily populated diseases such as heart failure with a different approach to determining health status. Focusing on factors such as depressive symptoms and appetite and how these factors can heavily affect the overall control of the chronic disease was fascinating from a readers perspective.
Second post-
In this article, research was conducted on older adults with heart failure and whether depression symptoms moderate their appetites. And the study was presented in a quantitative method which indicates analyzing numerical data due to the self-rating questionnaire methodology. Quantitative research includes methodologies such as questionnaires, structured observations or experiments and stands in contrast to qualitative research (“Subject and course guides: Quantitative and qualitative research: What is quantitative research?,” 2021). With that being said, the significance of research in managing these health problems cannot be overemphasized as it proffers solutions and directs the researchers toward the solution discovery to improve their health status when the outcome is implemented. Also, the article discussed well-known healthcare issues that our older adults face especially when they have multiple chronic illnesses that could lead them to depression and which can decrease their appetite thereby deteriorating their health status. Poor appetite is a common problem in older people living at home and in care homes, as well as hospital inpatients. It can contribute to weight loss and nutritional deficiencies, and associated poor healthcare outcomes, including increased mortality (Pilgrim, et al, 2015). More so, the findings from the article were mostly contributed to general nursing knowledge due to their experience with older adults with depression who have appetite impairment and the involvement of experts in nursing. The finding shows that appetite was associated with health status among patients with heart failure and this association was only significant in patients without depression symptoms due to the moderation effect of depressive symptoms on the association ( Andreae, et al, pg. E20, 2018).
