According to Sporre ( 2013), “formal criticism constitutes analysis that applies no external conditions or information … . When we use formal criticism, we analyze the artwork just as we find it” (p. 28). Develop a Powerpoint, including speaker notes, choosing a visual artist, and evaluate three of the artist’s works by focusing on both the technical aspects and its appeal to you personally (painting, photograph or sculpture). Include facts about your artist, and images of the artist and their works. Include in the presentation:
A biography or profile of the artist and background information
A detailed description of the art movement they were associated with, or the style of art they created/create.
A detailed description of at least 3 famous works of art – painting, sculpture, or photograph created by that artist. For each piece, be sure to provide an adequate analysis within the speaker notes of the Powerpoint. Use your text as support, and artistic terms appropriately.
Discuss the elements you find noteworthy about the artwork, using specific details from the work. Rather than giving the definition of the technical terms used to analyze the painting, you are to apply those terms in your own analysis of the work. ” This section gives you a list of six technical elements used for observing art and another six for looking at the composition of the work. Helpful related vocabulary for describing and discussing these elements in your paper is also provided. When you discuss the technical qualities of sculptures, be sure to focus on the formal and technical topics covered in Chapter Two. They include dimensionality (Sporre 2013, pp. 67-70), methods of execution (pp. 70-72), composition (pp. 72-73), and other factors such as articulation, focal area, lighting, and environment. To help you get started, make a simple list using the above-mentioned terms. Then list the characteristics of the sculpture that apply under each corresponding term. The “Sample Outline and Critical Analysis” on page 82 is also useful. At least 80 % of the narrative should be comprised of your own analysis.
Please use Speaker Notes to provide a Narrative related to each slide. The Narrative in the Speaker Notes is VERY Important, as that is the crux of this assignment. You are telling a story and providing your analysis in the PowerPoint, so the slides must flow together with an effective narrative to bring the artist and their art to life. The slide itself should have images with bullet points with very minimal text. If you are more tech-savvy, you can submit the project with audio…(optional)
