Part One.
On page 49 Vernon writes that “Philosophically speaking, the sources of the confusion stem from the fact that erotic love and friendship are similar in certain respects, and different in others.”

Part Two.
First, read and re-read pages 53-59 (the section called “Immortal Longings,” if your page numbers are different) as carefully as you can. Also make sure you have watched my video on Plato and Socrates. A
Then explain what Vernon means by this: “So, Plato’s theory of love is that sexual attraction can, with a degree of will power, and the gift of time, be channeled into a passion for things that the lovers share beyond (though not necessarily excluding) their desires for each others bodies.”

Essay 2
Vernon, “Faking It”
This journal entry comes in two parts.
First, explain Nietzsche’s two types of friends (ladders and circles). Then explain this: “Nietzsche is not saying that a shared past is not important to close friends. Rather, he’s arguing it’s not enough.” (Page 79)

Second, Vernon reminds us that the ancient Greek language has what is called the “dual case.” In the early years of the Greek language, some of the Greek dialects used a form known as the “Dual Case” when speaking of a pair of objects. So there were three “numbers” – singular (speaking of one), dual (speaking of a pair), and plural (speaking of more than one). (Page 86)
Explain how this can help us understand Aristotle’s idea that a friend is an other self, and gives us another way to think about what Nietzsche say.

Essay 3
First, explain what Telfer thinks are the necessary conditions of friendship: (a) reciprocal services (b) mutual contact (c) joint puruits. Why does she say the “shared activity” condition is not a sufficient condition for friendship?
Second, explain what why Telfer thinks the passions of friendship are important? What does she mean by this? How is it different from duty or benevolence? Why does she say that affection is irrational?
Third, why does she think that Aristotle is wrong in thinking that we need to think of our friends as good people? What are the two senses in which she nevertheless thinks Aristotle is correct?
Finally, what does Telfer argue that the real value of friendship is?

Essay 4
First, answer these questions to “warm up”:
What does Phaedrus mean by the wall of a “cultural immune system”? Why does the cultural immune system of the anthropologists and sociologists reject the idea of values as a locus of inquiry? (pp. 57-70) What is metaphysics? Why does Phaedrus say that values are what is most real in our experience?(pp. 71-76)
Second, answer these questions to really “get going”:
How does a Subject-Object Metaphysics distort human experience? How does the Metaphysics of Quality divide reality instead? (i.e. explain the difference between Static & Dynamic Good)
