Discuss how does the artwork reflect social/cultural concerns or ideas?

Objective: To help students understand the impact that art can have on both
them as a person, as well as the spaces and society around us.
Instructions:
You will need to visit an art museum or public
artwork for this project. In the age of COVID-19, this may look different than
what we normally expect. You have three main options:
1.
Visit a
museum in-person.
2.
Visit a
museum online. (Obsiously lets do this one)
3.
Visit a
public artwork or exhibition.
*In ALL of these cases, you will need to attach
a photograph of you with the artwork you have chosen. (LET ME KNOW WHICH ARTWORK AND THE WEBSITE OF THE MUSEUM, SO I CAN TAKE A PICTURE) This can be a selfie at
the museum, with your computer, or with the public artwork. Basically, we just
want to see evidence you are actually the one who has seen the artwork and that
it took place within the timeframe of this class.
During your visit
(however that looks—museum, computer, public), choose at least one piece of art
or a group of artworks by the same artist. You will want to choose a piece of
art that reflects on a social/cultural issue that you see present in the world
today (It can be one of the ones we have talked about or something else
entirely. It just needs to be relevant to the world we live in today. You get
to make the case for how that is!). It also does not have to be a contemporary
piece of art, but it must be able to translate to contemporary concerns. Answer
the following questions, which you will then type up in essay format to submit.
I suggest answering these questions while you are looking at the piece of art.
1.
What do
you think is important about this particular piece(s) of art?
2.
Do you
like it? Why or why not? How does the artwork affect you personally/ how does
it make you feel?
3.
Discuss how does the artwork reflect social/cultural concerns or ideas? How does it make you think
differently about them or give you a new perspective that you didn’t have
before?
4.
If you saw
the artwork in person, how does the artwork affect or communicate in relation
to the space it is in? (So why might it be important to see this artwork in
person rather than a picture?) If you saw it on a computer screen, reflect on
how your experience might have been affected by not being able to see it in
person (including benefits or downfalls).
5.
How did
the art visit affect the way you see the centrality of the arts in your life?
In other words, did it change your perspective on the value of art for your
personal life?
***Include the title
and artist of the art piece in the final essay, along with which particular museum
or place you visited.
To submit on Canvas, write
a 750-word double-spaced reflection on your visit, which includes your answers
to the above questions. You may include the picture at the end of the word
document you attach.
