Write a paper where you will make a case for the importance of the study of ethics for justice professionals. You are to answer the following question: Why should justice professionals study ethics?
You are to make clear and specific arguments (usually 3-5 key arguments) based solely on material covered in the modules in Canvas and the assigned readings. In other words, you do NOT need to research your main arguments in other sources. Your Canadian example can be drawn from other resources, outside the course text/Canvas modules. The course content you should focus on was presented in the “Initial Reading” in this module: Why Study Ethics? Download Why Study Ethics?by Pollock (2015) and Part 1: Chapter 1: Ethical Behaviour in McCartney and Parent, (2015).
A further component of this assignment is to take the argument that you make and apply it to a scenario. Find a recent Canadian example from corrections, policing, probation, or the courts which illustrates the points you made in your discussion. Dissect the example making the connection to the material presented in your paper. Please make sure you do NOT discuss why public safety individuals should be ethical, but why these professionals should study ethics.
The ability to write in a scholarly manner is a hallmark criterion for any bachelor’s degree; please remember this as you work on your paper. At this point in your education, you must follow APA standards for citing and formatting your paper (i.e., headings). Failure to do so will result in marks being deducted. The grading criteria used is the BAAJS Marking Guide. Make sure your paper has a clear thesis (persuasive) statement, an introduction, headings (APA formatted), and a conclusion. Papers that contain no references will be given a mark of 0. In addition, papers that match more than 25% from other sources (even if cited), need to be re-written to include more summarized or paraphrased content (the page on TurnItIn.com page offers more clarification). If you have a match rate of 25% (or higher) and do not address this before the due date, you may receive heavy deductions, as you have not written enough of the paper in your own words. Remember, if you cite a direct quote (in quotation marks), you must also cite the author’s last name, date of publication and page number. For information that has been summarized and paraphrased, please cite the author’s last name and year of publication. In this relatively short paper, there should not be too many direct quotes (around 2-3 maximum) and no long quotes (those over 40 words in length).
