Write a structured paper of roughly on a musician or group. You must choose your subject from the list of artists relevant to this class who have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I have uploaded this list to Canvas (under “Pages.”) Use at least three sources in assembling a concisely written overview of an artist’s style, career and contributions.
Format: Upload your paper to Canvas, structuring it as instructed below. Use double-spacing and one-inch margins in a readable typeface. Late papers will be downgraded and might not be accepted without a compelling excuse.
Main body of paper: The paper should be structured as follows, using suggested word lengths as a general guideline. You can write more than 1,200 words but don’t write less or you won’t properly cover the subject. Please follow this format, using these headings for each section. I’ve posted a sample artist biography (under “Pages”) for you to consult.
Inducted musicians – Provide the name(s) of the individual artist or inducted band members and his/her/their musical roles (vocals and/or instruments). (100 words)
Background – Provide a brief history of the musician or group. Where are they from? When and how did they find their way to a career in music? By whom were they influenced? How long was their career? (300 words)
Musical style – What are (or were, if defunct or deceased) the fundamental elements of your subject’s style? What are/were their main musical strengths: vocals, instrumental, songwriting, performing, producing, etc.? In short, what did they sound like, and what qualities made them unique? (300 words)
Principal works – To which label(s) did they sign and record? What are their best-known songs and albums? Why are these works so highly recorded? Did your subject excel as a recording act, performing act or both? Were there any notable career milestones (i.e., hit singles and/or albums, gold and platinum certifications, memorable live performances, Grammy or other significant awards)? (300 words)
Legacy – What has been their legacy and impact on popular music and culture? What made them deserving of lasting recognition and induction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? (200 words)
Discography and bibliography: Following the body of the paper, provide a brief selected discography of key works (albums and singles) and a bibliography of sources. Discographical entries should include titles, label and year of release. Try to include highest chart positions, if easily obtainable. Here are examples by the Beatles:
single: “I Want to Hold Your Hand” (Capitol, 1964, #1)
album: Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Capitol, 1967, #1)
Consult at least three sources (excluding Wikipedia), and use MLA style for your bibliography. In-text citations aren’t necessary, although if you quote a source directly, identify the source or provide a footnote. Note: you can use Wikipedia as a resource but not a cited source. (A tip: footnotes in Wikipedia often point to useful sources.)
Sources: For information on all Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, go to com/inductees (Links to an external site.). Other useful sources are the All Music Guide (allmusic.com (Links to an external site.)), Pitchfork (pitchfork.com/artists), Ultimate Classic Rock (ultimateclassicrock.com/artists) and the Encyclopedia Britannica (britannica.com). Official and fan-based websites can be found online. Google an artist’s name alongside such words as biography, interview, article, timeline and history. I look especially favorably on papers that cite magazine article(s) and/or book(s) as sources. The central branch of the Greensboro Public Library (219 N. Church Street, downtown Greensboro) has a solid collection of biographies about music and musicians, as does UNCG’s music library (in the College of Visual & Performing Arts, 100 McIver Street). You can view and search both libraries’ holdings online. Google Books (books.google.com) has the complete text of countless books and is searchable.
Allow sufficient time: This paper counts 20% of your final grade. It is not something you will do well on if you do not allow enough time to do adequate research and organize it into a final paper that is worthy of college-level work.
Don’t plagiarize! In the Internet age, old-school methods of term-paper research (digging through print sources in a library or archive) has given way to the lazy practice of Googling, copying, pasting and arranging quote blocks. This is not what writing college-worthy papers is all about. The Internet is an incredible storehouse of information. Your job is to access, digest and organize what you find there into a paper, giving proper credit when directly quoting works or citing a source’s facts, ideas or opinions. Musical Terms: Preferred Usage
rock and roll, rhythm and blues (R&B, for short), country and western (C&W or country music, for short)
Do not capitalize musical styles and genres (i.e., it’s blues, not Blues).
Song titles should appear in normal typeface inside quotation marks (e.g., “Stairway to Heaven”).
Album titles, magazines and newspapers should be italicized (e.g. Led Zeppelin IV, New York Times, Billboard).
