To complete your first Background: Hopefully, you have a better understanding of Carol Dweck’s theory of growth and fixed mindsets. Remember, while Dweck’s theory is from scientific research, these mindsets are what we naturally revert to when presented with problems, issues, or new things to learn. You have both of these mindsets within you. Keep this in mind as you write this paper.
Instructions: To complete your first major essay, be guided by the following.
1. Think of a situation in your life when you first had a fixed mindset about something and then converted your thinking to a growth mindset. Your situation could have happened in a class or a personal situation. You decide which to write about. What follows is a list of typical situations you might have encountered that you first had a fixed mindset about that changed to an open mindset.
2. In your essay, write to a general audience. This means, one, explain to your reader(s), in detail, everything they need to know to follow your ideas. For example:
a. Explain, by paraphrasing or using quotes, Dr. Carol Dweck’s Mindset theory.
b. Properly set up your situation; give all necessary details.
c. Connect the two themes – Dweck’s theory and your experience.
d. Conclude with an overall statement of what you have learned about Dweck’s Mindset theory.
3. As with all assignments in the class, be guided by (Use what follows like a checklist. Do not turn in your assignment until you have met each requirement on this list.)
a. Turn your paper in on time. Due Saturday, January 29, 6pm, in Moodle only. Note: There is a draft due Saturday, January22, 12pm, in Moodle only.
b. Underline your thesis statement.
c. Double-space your lines.
d. Give your essay a title to focus your theme.
e. Format your paper in MLA, this includes your heading and your in text citations and work cited page references. Pay particular attention to your hanging indentations on your works cited page.
f. Type in 12-point font.
g. Use Align Left margins for your essay (center your title).
h. Write two (2) to three (3) pages. Your document must be a full two pages, minimum. You can exceed three pages, but be mindful of repeating your ideas.
i. Review your paper for errors in grammar, syntax, punctuation, and spelling.
