Historical
Review Paper: World War II Assignment Overview
The Historical Review Papers will look
at several historical events important in American and world history vital for
national security. For national security professionals, understanding and
analyzing history correctly is an imperative. From that historical analysis
important lessons can be acquired. Not surprisingly, worldviews are an
important aspect of historical analysis–even definitions of words to include the
definition and belief in facts. Each worldview looks at history differently.
Some of the more common worldviews are: Secularism, Postmodernism, Marxism, and
the biblical/Judeo-Christian worldview. For example, some worldviews may
practice historical revisionism which is deleterious to accurate historical
analysis.

In this paper, the focus will be on two
World War II events: Pearl Harbor and the Battle of Midway. Everyone has some
knowledge about these events, but it is likely that you will learn some things
you did not know before and have a deeper understanding of the historical
events. More importantly, this will be an exercise in discernment and critical
thinking skills that are very practical in either the academic or professional
field of national security. In addition, you need to look at the various key
actors (e.g., both the Japanese and the U.S.).

Requirements for this paper are
outlined as follows:
· Length
of assignment is 6–8 full body pages.
· Format
of assignment is latest version of APA.
· Title
page, abstract, and a reference page(s) are required.
· An
introduction and conclusion are required in the body of the paper.
· Citations
should be liberally used when dealing with important facts that are not common
knowledge and where there are conflicts, or the true facts are not known.
· You
should have a total of 6–8 references/sources with two being outside scholarly
references plus the Bible or worldview reference (as required).
· Acceptable
references/sources

materials from the modules.

Scholarly articles, books, and
legitimate websites (not Wikipedia, etc.)
Content
of this paper should include the following:
1.
The student
will describe key aspects of the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Battle of
Midway to include:
· Background
and description of each historical event with a focus on intelligence.
· Importance
of each historical event to the U.S. (and specifically to intelligence).
· Key
successes and failures in both historical events.
· Reasons
for success and failure in both historical events.
· One other
area that you deem important to describe (optional).
2. Describe at least one major U.S. change regarding
intelligence resulting from Pearl Harbor and the Battle of Midway.
3. Describe
one modern intelligence failure or success (post World War II to present) that was
either learned or not learned from one of these historical events and
substantiate your answer with sufficient rationale.
4. Describe
the importance of a biblical or Judeo-Christian worldview when it comes to the
study of history (and its analysis) and compare it to at least one other
worldview (e.g., Postmodernism, Marxism).
5. A
conclusion that summarizes your most important points giving rationale to the
importance of good intelligence practices.
