The purpose of this assignment is to provide a
response to a current news story that appeared in a mainstream news source
since January 2021. This story will involve a particular company or the
behaviour of an individual in an organization for whom you feel there was a
failure to fulfill particular social responsibilities; focus your letter on a
business or not-for profit organization and not the actions of elected
government officials or matters of public policy. In this letter, provide a
summary of the facts at hand and the underlying ethical problem(s), outline
potential ethical responses that draw upon relevant theory, and argue for a
specific alternative course of action. Within your letter, also comment on why
this news story is significant in a broader social context, and what business actors
in general should learn from this event and your analysis of it. , whether from the course readings or beyond, in
addition to your news source(s). You should write this letter to the attention
of the leadership of the company in question. Letters will be evaluated based
on: 1) your clear and current understanding of the issue; 2) your ability to
analyze the issue through an ethical lens (using theory accurately) and present
recommendations and/or alternative courses of action; and 3) the extent to
which you extracted the broader relevance of this issue for business in
general. Also, grades will also be earned to the extent that your letter 4) is well
written and properly edited, with attention paid to the tone of your voice, and
5) contains properly researched and referenced issues and arguments, with credit
earned for quality sources.
