One way to practice telling stories and using details is to use the senses to create pictures that communicate ideas and feelings. This week, I want you to try to do just that. You are going to write a description of your own. .
So what are you going to describe? A school. Yes, a school! Easy, right? Well, here is your challenge:
You are going to describe the school as seen by a person who has just lost someone close to them. But here is the kick to this – DO NOT mention EITHER person or what happened. (PLEASE KEEP IN MIND: “loss” can be defined in many ways – it can be a breakup, moving away, a teacher retiring, a fight between best friends, OR it can be a death. You are not at all required to go dark and morbid, but you can if you choose to. What you need to do is use your words to paint a picture of a place, the emotion, and the event without coming right out and saying, “My favorite teacher left right in the middle of the school year.” That is TOO EASY!!)
HINT: Do NOT think too much into this. When we are happy, the world and all of our surroundings look bright and beautiful. Birds chirp. Sun shines. People laugh.
Well, reverse it! . Consider how the narration “sounds.” Try to see the details of the school and its surroundings through the eyes of the person who is sad or in mourning. How would the world and the school look now? Just start describing it. Use your imagination – is it an abandoned, decrepit school? Is it a school still vibrant and full of life, totally opposite of the main character’s feelings? It is all up to you to create.
But remember: describe it, convey the mood and emotions, but dont reveal the catalyst for it!
You may use this line as the jumping off point to start your story. You can include it somewhere in the middle or at the end. Or you may find that it doesnt fit in your work, and that is OK! It is just an idea to include the image:
The school looms in front of me as memories flood my mind ….
