Memo 1 – Technical Communication in my Profession
Assignment Sheet
OVERVIEW OF ASSIGNMENT
For this assignment, I ask that you gather information about the types of technical communication
you should expect to do in your future profession as a response memo that is written to answer
specific questions as set forth in this assignment. As you know, technical communication involves
the communication (writing, speaking, creating information) for specific audiences in your field
(your colleagues, peers, clients, fellow scholars, practitioners etc. etc.). I ask that you present
information from a rhetorical analysis of a journal article in your field. Use the memo format to
report on these. A memo features a header with common formatting, introduction, body, and
conclusion (see visual sample on p. 378).
In the introduction, you will write an overview of the memo in an introductory paragraph where you
sum up what you have found broadly about your profession. For the main section, after the
introduction, gather information of about 2-3 paragraphs for the rhetorical analysis. Here you discuss
your findings for the following SEVEN rhetorical concepts: audiences, genres, rhetorical appeals,
contexts, discourse communities, (visual) formats, and communication skills. End your memo with a brief conclusion that thanks the reader, restates your main points, and looks to the future.
