Write a paper for the President, introducing him/her to the physical and mental challenges of human space travel and exploration and your opinion of whether you support this idea for a mission or not.

The President of the United States must make a critical decision – whether or not to start the
mission planning process to send astronauts on a 2.5-year round-trip journey to explore the planet
Mars. You have been tasked to write a paper for the President, introducing him/her to the
physical and mental challenges of human space travel and exploration and your opinion of
whether you support this idea for a mission or not. Your research should support your decision to
persuade the President that this mission is a good idea or a bad idea and why.
Your paper must address both the psychological and physiological aspects of space travel (as
discussed in the chapters within the textbooks and highlighted in the Course Objectives section
of the syllabus – however you don’t need to organize your paper based on the Course Objectives
list). Specifically, your paper must address these issues from the standpoint of both the transit
to/from Mars (within the confines of the spacecraft) and a return to Earth, NOT the time spent
living on the surface of the planet itself. Although, you MAY address any physical issues that the
crew might experience after landing on Mars because of their return to a gravity environment.
You must address the specific impacts on the human body caused by long-duration missions
in the space environment and discuss how those impacts may affect mission execution and
mission success. Additionally, you need to identify questions that remain to be answered
and discuss possible countermeasures to mitigate the impacts of long-duration spaceflight.
You may also discuss ways that the International Space Station (or other facilities) could be
used to address some of the concerns associated with a human mission to Mars. Remember
that the paper’s purpose is to provide an adequate level of understanding of the
physical and mental challenges so your reader may assess the feasibility of a human
mission to Mars and decide whether or not to start the mission planning process.
Your paper must make a recommendation to the President on what his/her decision should be.
