In his article ‘The natural history of the newspaper’, Robert E. Park uses the Chicago school’s ‘ecological’ perspective on human culture (considering various factors such as urban and rural environments, modern technology, human behavior, consumer culture, political organization, etc.) to analyze how print newspapers developed their unique attributes as expressive of the ‘human ecology’ of Park’s time. In an approx. 350 word response on one page, use your own experiences with communication technologies to consider the question: if we were to extend Park’s approach to contemporary media such as television and the internet/social media, what might Park have said about the state of news delivery and consumption on these media? What characteristics of the newspaper have remained and what characteristics have changed? What factors in our present ‘human ecology’ have contributed to the continuation or transformation of these characteristics?
