Dietary analysis on yourself
Scope and purpose:
This project is designed to accomplish a number of goals:
Familiarize you with how to calculate total nutrient intake.
Recognize and understand any nutrient imbalances in your diet.
Learn how to spot the foods you regularly eat that may be especially bad for you.
Learn how to make recommendations for yourself to improve your dietary intake.
Learn how to use the web-based dietary analysis tool, Super Tracker.
Instructions:
This project will require you to set up a free account with www.myfitnesspal.com to analyze dietary
information. There are options to pay for the service or use it for free. You do not need the things you
pay for this project. There is a very hand smartphone app that goes with it too. When you enter data,
take note of the entry date. Make sure the date is the first day of your dietary journal. To help you
along, there are some pretty good videos about how to use this program on you tube — just go to you
tube and search for myfitnesspal- https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=myfitnesspal and
see where that takes you. There is a great variety of really good how-to videos and some great stories
of how people got control of their diet using fitnesspal
Once you get it all together for all of the days of your journal you can create nutrient reports and various
charts. Use these charts and the recommendations it generates to investigate your eating habits – good
points and bad points. This will ultimately lead to your analysis of your diet and suggestions for yourself.
Copy and paste all the reports you can generate into a single word document. Do this for each of the 7
days of your dietary journal period. It may be important to do the charting and nutritional function after
each day’s entry and display / copy paste this info after each day, because you may not be able get back
to each day’s total nutrition info very well. After you have done this for all of the 7 days in your
nutritional journal, generate a graph of intake over time. Click on this and it will allow you to look at
your intake of all sorts of things. Copy and paste into your word document the ones you see as most
important. Make sure everything is clearly labeled AND ORGANIZED in your document – don’t just
paste in a bunch of charts with no explanation or names. A good intro and short explanation of each
part of the analysis then a nice detailed thoughtful final analysis will get you a good grade!
Now that you have all of the info saved in a word file, it is time to analyze it. Start by looking at and
comparing your intake of various nutrients and vitamins etc with the recommended intake for each. See
if anything really stands out that you are consistently (over this 7 day period) high or low on. This may
also merit you analyzing that particular nutrient over the time period, showing that info in the report
too.
Once you have analyzed the data, you must make some recommendations for yourself concerning what
to eat and not to eat. If you are consistently low on fiber, how low, and what could you do to improve
this? If you get too much sodium or not enough vitamin A, make recommendations concerning what
you could eat to change your diet for the better.
The report should end with a summation of your analysis and a set of specific recommendations
(involving specific foods) you should eat more of or less of.
Please note that part of this project is to learn how to use this analysis tool. I have led you in the right
direction and put enough info in the description of how to do this to hopefully keep you from getting too
frustrated at the program, but not enough for you to “cookbook” this project. You will have to figure
some of this out yourself, and explore a bit on the pages. Feel free to click around to find other things
this analysis tool can do. Other than that, be ready to get much more info than you would ever though
useful on your diet!
Deliverable:
By the due date, you must post it to the proper assignment portal in a MS Word document or PDF, with
the name of document being your last name and the name of the document (for example: reinhart
dietary analysis.doc). The document may end up being very long, due to all the graphs and tables the
website generates, that is fine and expected. MAKE SURE YOU INCLUDEYOUR COMPLETE DIETARY
JOURNAL IN THIS REPORT. Pay close attention to the analysis. This should be about 1 page worth of a
narrative citing actual data from your report. Reflect on your eating habits and how to make a positive
change. If you notice any problems in your diet, note those and come up with remedies you are willing
to actually try.
33% Organization. This includes ease of finding data in your report – everything must be clearly labeled
33% Completeness of data. Is every day’s nutritional info there? Are there charts for the entire week?
34% Analysis. You need a clear detailed analysis of your current state based on the data used here and
information gleaned from the study, and a very detailed set of suggestions for yourself. Really – just like
you were preparing this analysis for someone else to suggest tangible ways to improve their nutritional
intake based on the data analyzed in this report.. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT – DO WELL ON THIS!
(The 7 day journal should start 1/23/22) an explain how the 7 day journal should look besides the analyzed report are uploaded to files.
