For this assignment, you must select a recent
magazine or newspaper article dealing with a current business issue or event
relevant to this class and/or information in a specific chapter. I suggest that
you preview the chapters to be covered in this class to assist you in choosing
an appropriate article. Please check with
M Fate if you are unsure of the applicability of either the article source of
subject matter.
Sources might include but are not limited to current issues
of publications such as the following: NEWSPAPERS, WALL STREET JOURNAL, FORBES,
FORTUNE, THE ECONOMIST, WORTH, NEWSWEEK, INC, MONEY, US NEWS, or another

This abstract should be one page, double spaced typewritten
pages and you must include a copy (or a working URL) of the article with your abstract.

Summary: The first part of your paper should summarize the major theme of the
article.
Issues: The next sections should discuss the business issues raised
by the article.
Analysis:
Discuss the various sides of the issue to indicate your understanding of the

Article Abstract Example
SUMMARY
In recent
months, there has been talk between Delta Airlines and Northwest Airlines of
the possibility of a merger between the two companies. The hurt that the
airlines took after 9/11 was devastating, and the merger would strengthen the
base of the two companies and create one, larger, but more successful company.
As of now, the companies are hearing from their respective unions, and seeing
if the unions can work out a deal to make the merger possible. If the unions can
agree, then the two companies vow to declare their intention to merge. If the
merger goes through, economists predict that four other American owned airlines
will attempt to merge as well. The most likely pairs would be American Airlines
and US Airways, and the other merge between United Airlines and Continental
Airlines.
ISSUES
The
underlying issue that is encouraging these companies to merge is the fact that
most of these companies have been reconstructed under Chapter 11
bankruptcy. According to “The Economist”, the
American airline industry has seen a 39% decrease in employment, a 30% decrease
in wages, and in total there has been over $20 billion defaulted on pensions.
The companies believe that if they merge, they will be able to re-establish
stability in the airline industry and create more jobs and earnings in the long
run. Another big reason for the merger would because of the prices of gas. Many
of the companies are using planes that are very old and thus very inefficient
when it comes to fuel usage. If the merger was allowed then companies could use
the older planes less often and eventually gain enough money and stability to
purchase new planes that are more environmentally friendly and fuel efficient.
The big reason why the airlines are trying to push this past right now is
because they know a Republican President in the white house is more
big-business friendly, and he is more probable to allow the merger of such
large corporations.
ANALYSIS
Supporters
of the merger argue that this will benefit the airlines in the long run, and it
will create more jobs and more flight efficiency. The airlines will be able to
create more comprehensive flight plans that will allow consumers more ability
to get from one place to another with greater ease. Also, supporters of the
merger say that if the merger does not go through, then flights to low use
airports will be lowered, affecting the availability of travel from scarcely
visited destinations. Thos e who oppose the merger say that the merges will
only increase travel prices because of less competition, and the consumers will
be the losers in all of this. They also say that less popular airlines such as
Southwest or Midwest airlines will rush in to
the small airports and ensure that flights will continue from the scarcely
traveled destinations.
