Example Essay Checklist
✓ Your essay should have 5 paragraphs: an introduction (with a thesis statement), three body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
✓ Your thesis statement should have a topic + stance on that topic + 3 reasons why. For example: German Shepherds are the best family pet because they are loving, playful, and intelligent.
✓ Your thesis statement should be the last sentence of your introductory paragraph.
✓ Your three body paragraphs should be about the three reasons you listed in your thesis statement.
o For example: Thesis – German Shepherds are the best family pet because they are loving, playful, and intelligent.
o Body Paragraph 1: This paragraph will discuss how German Shepherds are the best family pet because they are loving.
o Body Paragraph 2: This paragraph will discuss how German Shepherds are the best family pet because they are playful.
o Body Paragraph 3: This paragraph will discuss how German Shepherds are the best family pet because they are intelligent.
✓ Each body paragraph should begin with a topic sentence that reiterates the thesis.
✓ The conclusion should restate the thesis and provide final thoughts.
✓ The introduction and conclusion paragraphs should have 4-5 sentences each.
✓ EACH body paragraph should have 10 sentences.
✓ No use of contractions throughout the entire essay
✓ Only use third person to write in (he, she, etc)
✓ Paper is set up in MLA format: 12 point Times New Roman, Header, Title, 1inch margins, indented paragraphs, “0” after point
