I’m very nice and welcoming, middle class. Serbian-croatian. It’s fine if you go off of imagination. I can just edit that if necessary but if you can make sure to follow the instructions there should be no issues! :]
Overview:
During Module 5, we are exploring the ways in which our identity is shaped and informed by the social, cultural, historical context within which we live and grow. This involves reflecting on the relationship between identity and power, with specfic attention to the dynamics of domination and subordination in society. Journal #2 invites you to reflect on the applicability of these ideas and insights to your own lived experiences.
Instructions:
Step 1: Begin by reflecting on ‘who you are’ and the ways in which your identity is multidimensional. What different traits and characteristics most define you? How would you introduce or describe yourself to someone who doesn’t know you?
Step 2: Discuss how your identity reflects the dynamics of both domination and subordination, as defined and discussed in your reading and learning materials. What elements or aspects of your identity are privileged in society, and in what ways? What elements or aspects of your identity are subordinated in society, and in what ways?
Step 3: Conclude by reflecting on Tatum’s argument that we are all responsible for “acknowledging our complicity in the oppression of others.” (Tatum, 1997, 27) Do you agree with Tatum? If yes, how might we ‘acknowledge our complicity in systems of oppression’? If not, why not, and how else might we understand and approach social inequality?
Requirements:
Your entire journal (all three parts) should be approximately 250 words in length, using proper sentence and paragraph structure.
In your response, you are required to use ideas taken from both your reading and your online learning materials. All ideas need to be paraphrased properly (i.e. you are required to put ideas entirely in your own words; do not copy directly from your textbook or learning materials). For help with paraphrasing, consult this resource: https://liberalarts.humber.ca/assets/files/writing_centre/PARAPHRASING.pdf
NO OUTSIDE SOURCES are permitted for this assignment. NO MORE THAN ONE BRIEF DIRECT QUOTE is permitted for this assignment. Failure to properly paraphrase and/or use of any source other than your reading and learning materials will be considered plagiarism and will result in an automatic grade of zero.
You are required to reference all paraphrased and directly quoted ideas using proper APA referencing format. This involves both complete in-text citations within the body of your paper (see this link for guidance: https://library.humber.ca/help/apa/text-citations) and a complete bibliography at the end your journal (see this link for guidance: https://library.humber.ca/sites/default/files/APA%20Tip%20Sheet-v2-06-2020.pdf)
I look forward to reading your reflections.
