Your assignment is to write a 500-word response paper (~2 pages) focusing on the
selected chapters. Please do not make this a summary of both chapters. Please think about
and analyze what you read. You must refer to specific page numbers and/or very brief
quotes in your response to demonstrate engagement with and an understanding of the
material.
You are encouraged to write using first-person perspective, but please be sure
to
use academic prose (avoid using contractions, etc.).

You must use MLA format* for citing
page numbers or quotes from the readings. You may choose to consider some or all of the
following issues in your response paper:
• Your thoughts about the authors’ discussion of music’s meaning beyond the lyrics:
o the way music is transmitted from the performer to the listener and/or the
sound of the performer’s voice
o the genre or “musical codes”
o the performance and/or the performers’ image and visual cues as experienced
in a live concert setting
o the overall context in which we experience music
• Your thoughts about the influence technology has had (videos, other media, digital
music formats) on the way musical meanings are interpreted.
• Thoughts about the role the music industry plays in terms of what we, as consumers,
hear and have access to. Has the industry’s role changed over time?
• Questions you may wish to discuss or comparisons you may want to make based on
your own experiences with specific songs or musicians referenced in either chapter.
The purpose of this assignment is to encourage you to think and write critically about
the assigned chapters and issues addressed in them. Please do not simply write a summary
of the material.
