Policy
Reviews (PRs) 1-4 Directions & Outline
ALS
3040: Federal Policy and Structural Violence
Professor
Klonowski, Fall 2021
Directions: Throughout
the semester, students will submit a Policy Review (PR) for each unit of the
course for a total of 4 separate policy reviews on education policy, criminal
justice policy, environmental policy, and labor/employment policy. In each PR, students
will summarize policies from the unit, analyze the policies using structural
and cultural violence theories, make policy recommendations, and conclude their
essay. Policy Reviews 1-4 should be…
· 3-4
pages in length
· Times
New Roman Size 12 font only
· 1.5
spaced (NOT double-spaced)
· follow
APA-format for in-text citations
· will
include a separate APA reference page (does not count toward the page limit)
· will
include a minimum of 5 sources
o
at least 4 sources should be from course
material and
o
at least 1 new source researched and incorporated
by the student in paragraph 4
o
citing the name of a policy does not count
toward use of resources, but any policy mentioned should be included on your
reference page. For example,
§ This
mention of a policy does not count toward your 4 class resource
requirement, but the policy itself should be included on your reference page:
“The education policy A Nation at Risk (1983)…”
§ This
mention of a course reading which assesses the impact of a policy is meaningful
and does count toward the 4 class resource requirement: “As AUTHOR
(Year) summarizes, the legacy of A Nation at Risk (1983) includes x, y,
z”
Outline: Each
Policy Review (PR) should consist of the following 5 paragraphs. Paragraphs are
5-7 sentences in length and each paragraph should be thoroughly developed.
There should not be a noticeable discrepancy between paragraph lengths. All
paragraphs should be similar in length and quality.
PRs are to be written by applying course material and
should not be opinion-based. Some policies were created by Republican
administrations, others by Democratic administrations, and so on. The purpose
of these reviews are to analyze elements of the policy and should not focus on
who created the policy. Your paper should not be reflective of political
opinions. A sample outline of how to write your PRs by considering the
following questions is available below.
I.
Introduction
a. Summary
of each of the policies of the unit (i.e. education, CJ, enviro., labor)
i. What
was the major scope or aims of each policy in the unit?
ii. What
commonalities exist amongst the policies in the unit?
iii. Were
any policies of the unit deemed more successful than others? Why?
b. Conclude
with a thesis statement
i. *The
introduction paragraph should not include any in-text citations
II.
Analysis of Structural Violence
a. Define
structural violence
b. What
dimensions of violence are present in each policy of the unit?
c. Are
there any overlapping dimensions amongst all policies in the unit?
i. *I
suggest you cite at least 2 course resources in this paragraph
III.
Analysis of Cultural Violence
a. Define
cultural violence
b. What
impact did each policy of the unit have on those from various backgrounds (i.e.
race, social class, gender, ability)?
c. What
are some of the invisible consequences of these policies?
i. *I
suggest you cite at least 2 course resources in this paragraph
IV.
Policy Recommendations
a. Based
on the critiques you have read of the policy and its impact, what changes would
improve the policy? Make at least 3 recommendations.
b. How
would these changes reduce structural and cultural violence?
c. Consider
incorporating the Transcend Method
i. *You
are required to research and include 1 new source in this section that is not
from course reading
V.
Conclusion
a. Summarize
the overall legacy and impact of policies from the particular unit and
meaningfully conclude your essay. There should be no citations in the
conclusion paragraph, as you are simply summarizing the main points of your
essay.
Students who submit their initial Policy Reviews 1-4
on time will be able to revise and resubmit to improve their grade within
one week of the initial submission. Students can earn up to half the
points missed. For example, a student who earns 40/50 on PR may revise and
resubmit to improve their grade up to a 45/50 depending on the quality
of the revision.
