Hello! I need an essay that follows the guidelines that I have outined below. I am open to your topic ideas but originally thought of writing this paper on the ethics and issues of misinformation on platforms such as Facebook, instagram and youtube. More specific-ally on how misinformation is taken down in the us, but not in other countries/when a language other than english is involved.
to get a better understanding of what Im talking about I have also included a fun youtube link where John Oliver explains this a bit more in depth
Please not that this is a philosophy paper so defining what misinformation is and backing it up with academic sources is critical.
why is misinformation a problem
why is spreding it wrong
why is it wrong for others to sread misinformation etc.
TOPIC:
The media plays a vital role in shaping the public sphere. Given the role of the media in the public sphere, what moral obligations fall upon the media? For this paper I would like you to identify one of these moral obligations, explain what this obligation is, construct an argument for why this obligation applies to mass media, and determine the extent to which mass media meets, or fails to meet, this obligation.
When composing your paper try to answer all of the following questions:
What is the public sphere and how is the media involved in the public sphere? Why should we be morally concerned with the quality of the public sphere that we inhabit and the manner in which it is shaped by the media?
What is one of the moral obligations of the media vis-á-vis its role in the public sphere? Why does media have this obligation? Does media live up to this moral obligation or does it not? Why or why not?
I expect that, in addition to any relevant sources drawn from the syllabus, you will make use of at least 2 high quality academic sources when composing this paper.
GRADING CRITERIA:
I will be grading this assignment according to four criteria. These criteria are:
1) Content- 50% of grade: This section of the grade will reflect the quality of your argumentation and the depth of your understanding of the material. The better your arguments and the more in depth your presentation of the material, the better your grade will be
2) Citation- 10% of grade: You MUST cite the text in your answers. If you say that Kant claims that Toad is best character to play in the levels that involve a lot of digging in Mario 2, show me where in the text he says this. You can choose to either just reference where in the text it appears or you can quote the portion of the text that is relevant to your answer (with page numbers of course). I encourage you to quote where it makes sense, but if you quote make sure to explain what that quotation means in your own words. And of course plagiarism results in a failure of the course.
