Write an essay responding to one of the following questions:How is the individual soul related to the city, according to Socrates in the Republic?
To answer this question, consider: What is the composition of the ideal city? What is the composition of the soul? What are the virtues of the city, and what are the virtues of the soul?
Though Socrates speaks against falsehood in religious belief in general throughout the Republic, he does defend a particular myth called the “myth of the metals” or the “noble lie.” Explain this myth and why Socrates argues it would be helpful in governing the ideal city?
To describe the knowledge of the rulers of his ideal city and how that knowledge would be perceived by others, Socrates uses the “Allegory of the Cave.” Explain this allegory and the lesson(s) Socrates draws from it.
The Goal
The goal of this paper is to demonstrate that you can explain an important idea from the Republic in your own words. One helpful way to do this is to imagine you are explaining the answer to a friend, a family member, or coworker who has not read the Republic.
I strongly suggest that you avoid reading summaries online (like Wikipedia or Sparknotes). It is very common for these sorts of summaries to end up in your paper, intentionally or not, and using another summary as your own is plagiarism.
Length
The essay should be 1-2 pages with standard formatting (double-spaced, 12pt Times New Roman font, 1″ margins).
Citations
Please cite only the Republic. Citations should note the paragraph numbers (e.g., 409c or 511e-512b). There is no need for a works cited page since I have assigned the text you will be referencing. If you use quotations, do not let them write the paper for you. That is, before or after a quotation, summarize it and explain why it supports your argument or interpretation.
