Your analysis should focus on analysis and contain very little summary. Your audience is your classmates: fellow students who are trying to understand what makes a good rhetoric, good rhetoric. This is an academic essay, meaning you must provide good reasons and evidence for your claims. Your purpose may be to explore, persuade, or inform. All of you, in part, will be seeking to persuade, to persuade your audience that a speech is effective or ineffective.
Your thesis statement should explain whether the speech is rhetorically effective and why, mentioning specific strategies that makes the speech effective or ineffective. The introduction or a background paragraph will explain some of the typical genre expectations of the speech, such as who the audience is and typical elements of that particular speech (for instance, a State of the Union address has a particular form that is different from a speech given at a rally). Several body paragraphs will then outline each strategy and provide examples of the strategies. Then the paragraphs will analyze what makes that strategy effective or ineffective.
