Essay Assignment:
Closely examine how Othello’s psychological transformation throughout the course of the play unmasks his flawed sense of judgment and reasoning. In what ways do jealousy and love intersect and play upon Othello’s perception of Desdemona? How and why is Othello so readily accepting of Iago’s lies? Why is Othello so open to Iago’s misinformation, yet so closed off to the reality of his own marriage? In considering these general questions, trace Othello’s descent into madness and analyze how, from a psychological standpoint, he seems to lose all sense of reason and internalize Iago’s sexually paranoid and misogynist language.
