Explain how does Machiavelli’s The Prince reflect the culture and politics of his time?

How does Machiavelli’s The Prince reflect the culture and politics of his time? In some ways The Prince exemplifies the values and uses the tools of Renaissance humanism; in other ways Machiavelli’s text seems at odds with the views and values expressed by other Renaissance humanists and Renaissance artists. Describe and explain this tension. What were the political realities he was responding to? To what extent was Machiavelli a humanist? Why did his contemporaries find The Prince so shocking?

Your paper should be based on a close reading of the Prince, in which you provide specific examples from the text. Interpret the text in its historical context, pointing out relevant similarities or contrasts with other humanist thinkers and artists, by drawing on class lectures, lecture slides, and your textbook.
