In trying to answer this question, please include your consideration of the
following questions and items:
In which ways does Gilgamesh – who is said to be “two thirds a god, one third a
man” – become more human? What do you mean by “more human”? What is your own
standard or definition of “humanity” by which you are measuring the evolution of
Gilgamesh’s humanity? What has he learned and felt and experienced in becoming more
human? Has he gained the right kind of wisdom in order to become more human?
Refer briefly to at least three specific episodes or scenes from the story to
illustrate how Gilgamesh has become more human. You should choose at least one scene
from the first half of the story (Tablets 1-6) and at least one scene from the second half of
the story (Tablets 7-12) in order to say something about Gilgamesh’s evolution as a
human being.
Finally, conclude your paper by briefly comparing the story of Gilgamesh to
another story you know (from literature, film, television, or even a song) in which a
character somehow becomes “more human” by the end of the story. Explain why these
stories are similar and/or different.
