Communication Apprehension

Explain communication apprehension, using and citing your textbook.
Describe a time you experienced a specific type of communication apprehension identified in your textbook (dyadic, group or meeting, or public speaking) in the workplace.
Explain two specific strategies you can use to overcome your communication apprehension based on advice from Chapter 5 and the Speaking Up Without Freaking Out | Matt Abrahams | TEDxPaloAlto (Links to an external site.)
Explain what you will gain from making these improvements.

1) Read the discussion requirements and note that you must:
• Explain communication apprehension, using Bevan. Remember that explaining is not the same
thing as “defining.” Explaining provides detail about a phenomenon to make it clearer and more
meaningful for the reader. For instance, you might simply say “communication apprehension is
the fear of some communicative exchange.” That is a definition. An explanation goes into detail
about what the fear might look like and its implications. For “communicative exchange,” you
would explain what these might be and how apprehension might occur.

• Describe a time when you have experienced communication apprehension. The more detail
you provide here the better. Consider answering a few of these questions: What was the
situation? Who was involved? How did you experience the apprehension? What was the result,
in both the short- and long-term? What are the stakes? Why does the situation matter to you?

• Explain two techniques to overcome communication apprehension. For this, you must use
Bevan and one of the videos. You should already have a scenario of a situation that caused you
some anguish. Now, you need to connect your situation to some advice can you follow from
Bevan and one of the videos to help you overcome this fear in the future. Perhaps you could
address exactly how you might “practice” speaking in front of others. Try to be as precise as
possible and explain why Bevan thinks this technique is so effective. For the videos, they offer
precise advice for overcoming stage fright. If you use that one, explain at least one point from
them and how you can utilize the advice in your life. Remember, you want to directly mention
Bevan and one of the videos. You want to do more than just list some idea from them. You want
to “engage” with them. Read the week 1 “Engaging With Experts” document in the “resources”
section of the week 1 discussion to learn more about the difference between simple use of a
source and deeper engagement.
