Compare and contrast the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution of 1787 (the one we have now). Be sure to include discussion of the structure and powers of government under the two constitutions. What were weaknesses of the Articles and how did the new Constitution address these weaknesses?
– “Discuss the structure and powers of government” means to discuss the structure of institutions each constitution created, then then the powers of each institutional structure. For instance, what institution made up the legislative branch of government and how was is structured – what did it look like as an institution? How about the executive? Were there separate branches of government? What powers and authority over what areas did the constitution give to the institutions of the government?
– Be sure to discuss government created by BOTH constitutions. Do not just talk about government under the Articles of Confederation and why it was replaced. You still need to then discuss the structure and powers of government created by the new Constitution and how was it different from government under the Articles?
– Organize your answer into several paragraphs with an introduction paragraph, a few body paragraphs, and conclusion. Try to show you understand how government looked institutionally (structure) and what its parts could do (powers) under each constitution.
– There is no word count minimum or maximum. You need to show you understand the material and provide enough information and analysis to make that clear. More is not always better, but it is not possible to answer fully in a half page. Typically, answers are 3-4 pages; however, some excellent 2 page answers earn As if succinctly showing thorough understanding.
– You do not need to do any research for this essay since the unit materials and textbook tell you all you need to know to answer the essay well. The PowerPoints are a great place to begin and end when looking for information. If you think you need to look things up online, this is a red flag you did not work through the unit. You should go back to the unit to learn what is needed for this essay.
