The Assignment
Keep track of your sleep patterns for a week (please fill in the sleep pattern) (e.g., how many hours each night (or day if you work the 3rd shift), the times you went to sleep and got up, any difficulty sleeping, were you on your phone just before bed, did you take any naps). I will attach a Sleep Table which may help you with your analysis.
Write an essay analyzing your sleep. Consider the following questions:
What do you notice about your sleep patterns? Was the past week typical for you? If not, why not?
How long does it usually take for you to fall asleep?
Did the quality of your sleep differ throughout the week due to medications, stress or what you did right before going to bed?
Do you tend to wake up during the night? If so, how many times and how long do you stay awake?
Do you take naps? If so, do they affect your sleep that night?
Do you get more sleep on some days than others (e.g., weekends vs weeknights)? Did the time you went to sleep or woke up differ during the week?
Do you feel rested when you wake up? Are you tired during the day?
According to sleep experts, are you getting enough sleep? How much sleep do you think is optimal for you personally? Why? (Make sure to see the NSF Recommended Sleep Times document included with this assignment.)
What are some things you can do to get a better quality of sleep?
You should discuss your sleep analysis (i.e., write in paragraph form – do not simply list answers to the questions above; discuss them in a cogent essay). I’m looking for critical thinking and that you have really analyzed your sleep. The more evidence of critical thinking and analysis, the better your grade will be.
Your essay should be a minimum of one full page, standard font (Times New Roman), 1-inch margins, and double-spaced. (Please double space.) Please do not include the MLA block at the top (with your name, class, date).
You should upload your essay in pdf or .docx (or .doc) format. Do not upload in Pages format. (Moodle does not translate Pages so I won’t be able to read it.) Make sure to check spelling and grammar. It will be due on Sunday, February 6 at 11:55 PM.
As always, if you are aiming for “A” or “B” level work, you should go beyond the minimum requirements and show strong critical thinking. It will be graded out of a total of 25 points.
