Information:
The impetus for widening the concept of diversity and exposing its
strategic importance and challenges has been culture. When companies
continue to grow internationally, they soon discover that operating
within new communities requires a greater awareness and appreciation of
culture. Needs, interests, experiences, and ways of operating require an
organization to employ local workers to best understand these
complexities.
Similarly, cultural influences have also influenced attitudes to
diversity and inclusion in ways that some organizations are not used to.
There is a generational divide between developing and emerging
countries; for instance, developed nations are facing an aging
population, while developing countries have a much younger workforce.
The challenge will be to attract and retain multi-generational workers
and to discover generational gaps in job styles, motivation, technical
skills, and communication preferences. Thus, culture brings diversity
and inclusion to the forefront.
The recognition of diversity is fraught with issues. When working
with various cultures in a diverse setting, communication issues will
undoubtedly arise. Communication issues do not necessarily mean that
deep-seated cultural norms are being violated. Rather, it just means
that there are possible differences in the way that various populations
perceive certain things. For example, in many western nations, direct
communication is the norm and preferred style of communication. While in
contrast, in many eastern cultures, indirect communication is the norm.
Also, views of attitudes toward hierarchy and authority are viewed
differently by various cultures.
Understanding these differences can help an organization navigate
through various communication issues found when working with diverse
populations.
