Natural & Technological Hazards

This week we will consider hazards in emergency management and homeland security. There are three academic articles to read and you should use those to address PCA #3 for this week.
As always, keep it to about a page, hit the main points, and keep things as organized and well written as possible

Each of the articles (Adger, Smith and Kasperson) discusses research and ways of identifying, evaluating, planning for, and responding to hazards and risks of hazards. PIck two hazards that interest you — one natural and one technological — I realize that the line between them is sometimes blurry but choose two hazards based on what you consider to be of interest, and according to your own understanding of natural hazards and technology hazards – you won’t be wrong. These could be hazards considered to be “natural” such as earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, etc., as well as more “technological” hazards such as global warming, electrical grid failures, cyber vulnerabilities, etc. But again, whatever you choose, you are not going to be wrong about how you classify the hazard.

For your PCA: (1) define each of your two hazards; (2) discuss the concepts from the reading including what factors make a society “vulnerable” and “suscepitble” to each of your chosen hazards; (3) what factors increase “resilience” to the hazards.
Also, for each of the hazards you choose please consider a fourth point (4) as to how human activities, societies, institutions, economic divisions, etc., may contribute to the impact and resiliency problems of a hazard. For example, poverty, lack of government resources, and poor living conditions are likely to exacerbate the negative impacts of an earthquake in a poor country versus a developed country in specific ways.
A suggestion here is that you break the PCA into two sections:
A. Natural Hazard: Then discuss the 4 points above as applicable to the natural hazard;
B. Technology Hazard: Then discuss the 4 points above as applicable to the technology hazard.
