Assessment: Dialectical/Dialogic Journal

Objectives:
1.
Demonstrate that you’ve read
the course texts by identifying concepts and examples (quotations, paraphrases,
or summary) that contributed to your learning;
2.
Demonstrate that you understand
the course concepts by explaining your insights and reactions for each entry.
3.
Connect learning to history,
personal experience, current events, etc. (as applicable).
Steps:
1.
For each day of assigned
reading, read/view course materials and keep track of insights and ah-ha
moments.
2.
Select and note concepts and
examples in a format that best suits you (you don’t have to use a chart like I
did above as long as all the elements are there).
3.
Spend some time developing your
insights/reactions/connections. I expect this to be the bulk of the journal.
4.
Before you turn it in, polish
up your work, fixing typos, errors, etc. You might find that you can
ideas/reflection to add upon completing the unit’s work and attending class
discussion.

Assessment: 20 pts

Please remember that the purpose of this
project is to assess your reading and understanding of course material. Make
your learning visible to me so I can assess it!

Texts Assessed: Video clip from Rosemary
Garland-Thomson; memoir/manifesto: Exile and Pride; memoir excerpt from I
Know Why the Caged Bird Sings; poem “Frida Kahlo and Me.” You may
also use texts introduced in class, but at least 80% of your total entries need
to come from the list above.

6 pts: Concept/Example: 48 entries total.
These don’t have to be equally distributed for each reading, but you should
have at least two from each text listed above.

12 pts: Insight/Reflection: Each
concept/example should include an insight/reflection component. It’s okay
wonder about the ideas, to argue with them, to think them through honestly. These
entries should demonstrate an accurate interpretation of the literature and
basic understanding of course concepts. At least eight of the 48 entries
should contain connections to community, history, personal experience, etc.

2 pts Neatness/clarity. Although this isn’t
a formal, style-based project, I expect you to use standard spelling,
punctuation, etc.
