You are to upload the journal for Chapter 2 where you deeply discuss two concepts that relate to you regarding the chapter reading or something that was covered in class related to the chapter that resonated with you. This is to be two full pages, double spaced. using 1-inch margins, and not larger than 12 font.
The term self-concept refers to your awareness about yourself. It is your picture of yourself that includes your perceptions about the kind of person you are; your view of your worth, value, and possibilities; the way you see yourself in relation to others; the way you ideally would like to be; and the degree to which you accept yourself as you are. From ages 6 to 12 the view you have of yourself is influenced greatly by the quality of your school experiences, by contact with your peer group and with teachers, by your cultural context, and by your interactions with your family. To a large extent, your self-concept is formed by what others tell you about yourself, especially during the formative years of childhood. Whether you develop a positive or negative outlook on yourself has a good deal to do with what people close to you have expected of you as well as with the messages you have received through media and other sources about salient aspects of your identity, including your cultural identity.
This view of yourself influences how you present yourself to others and how you act and feel when you are with them. For example, you may feel inadequate around authority figures. Perhaps you tell yourself that you have nothing to say or that whatever you might say would be stupid. More often than not, others will see and respond to you in the way you “tell” them you are, both verbally and nonverbally. Monitor the messages you are sending to others about yourself, and become aware of the patterns you might be perpetuating. It is difficult for those who are close to you to treat you in a positive way when you consistently discount yourself. Others cannot give you what you will not give to yourself. In contrast, people with a positive self-concept are likely to behave confidently, which causes others to react to them positively.
