The struggle between liberals and conservatives profoundly shaped Latin American societies after independence throughout the 19th century. Different from the contemporary uses of “liberal” and “conservative,” these struggles were centered around questions of the Enlightenment and national sovereignty. Both a world view and a political movement, liberalism was a central feature of Mexican history in the 19th century.
Please dentify the key characteristics of both conservatism and liberalism in Latin America. In this section, focus primarily on the ideals and principles surrounding these two philosophies. Next, discuss what were the principal differences between the Liberal and Conservative parties in Mexico by the mid-nineteenth century? How did these contrasts actually affect politics in Mexico? The second part should draw from Vanderwood’s article on La Reforma and Benito Juárez.
Requirements: The paper length should be between 3 pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12-point font, with footnotes where necessary. Paper should include a title.
The introductory paragraph should be a minimum of three sentences and a maximum of six-seven sentences.
The introduction should include what main topic/idea/question you plan to pursue in your paper. For example, “In this paper, I will demonstrate that the emergence of human rights in South America occurred in the same period as democratization.” Or for example, “My paper will identify the main characteristics of modernist architecture and its impact on American cities.”
The introduction can be thought of as “a preview,” you are giving a brief synopsis of the main ideas the reader can expect to find in the paper (ex. “In the first part of this paper, I will discuss….”)
*I will add easy and quick powerpoints to give a bit of background for the first part of the paper. I will also add the Vanderwood’s article on La
Reforma and Benito Juárez article for the second part of the paper.*
