1)Based on your readings, lectures, and the film “The Message,” identify and
explain some of the fundamental Islamic beliefs and values that are in sharp
contrast to those that existed in the pre-Islamic period (called the Jahiliyya in
Arabic). You must discuss at least five such beliefs and values in detail.
Be sure to refer to as many relevant readings as you can and clearly indicate the
source of your information, either as an in-text citation or as a footnote or endnote.
2) In a concluding paragraph, express your personal assessment of the film “The
Message” and evaluate how well it was able to convey some of the information
that you have obtained from the readings. Are there some details that you have
picked up through your readings that are missing or could have been emphasized
more in the film? Or, did the film convey information or a nuance that is missing
from the readings?
When referencing the reading assignments, you must mention the author, brief title
of work cited, and page number/s. You only need to refer to assigned readings, so
a full bibliography is not necessary for them. You may not consult with anyone
else – your essay must reflect your own words and effort.
You will be evaluated on the quality and depth of your analysis, your ability to
back up your statements with reference to appropriate readings, lectures, and
content of the film, style of expression and proper use of the English language,
including spelling and punctuation. Writing style should be formal so avoid
colloquialisms (slang expressions). Please proofread your paper carefully and
save a copy of it.
