General Guidelines and Point Allocation
1. Select a topic of interest related to nursing or respiratory therapy.
2. Perform a search of at least 3 databases (i.e. CINAHL, Medline, PubMed, PsychINFO, Cochrane, ERIC, etc.).
3. Identify one research article from each database that is relevant to your specific topic. The articles should reflect evidence-based practice (i.e. they should be a quantitative or qualitative research article, case study, systematic review meta-analysis, or literature review).
4. In addition, find at least one reputable website related to your topic (American Heart Association, Alzheimer’s Association, American Lung Association, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, World Health Organization, etc.). Identify information within the website that one might use to educate patients or health care professionals about your topic.
5. Type a description of your literature search activity that includes the following headings and information:
Introduction (15%):
Briefly present the topic you selected, why you chose the topic and the importance of your topic to nursing/respiratory therapy. (You can write in the first person, for example, “I chose this topic because……………”)
Search Strategy (60%):
Describe the search strategy (including databases used, search terms, and results) you used for each database. Explain how you had to refine or expand your initial search strategy to find relevant research articles for your topic. For each research article selected, in one sentence, describe what the article is about and the type of article (quantitative research, qualitative research, systematic review, meta-analysis, literature review, case study) it is. Identify the WWW site used to obtain similar information about your topic. For the educational information obtained from the site, provide a rationale for why you think the information is or is not reliable and useful in educating patients and families or health care professionals about your topic
Evaluation (10%):
Evaluate your experience with this activity. Did you learn approaches to be more efficient in your search? Did you learn new information or did this experience reinforce your existing knowledge of searching the literature? Describe how easy or difficult it was to obtain relevant research citations and information.
*The introduction, search strategy description, and evaluation should be double-spaced and no longer than 4 pages.
Attachments (10%):
• Attach a one-page list of citations/ reference information for the three research articles that you
selected from the databases. Use *APA format* when listing your citations/ references.
• Attach a printed search strategy from one of the databases you searched in to show the steps you took to find the article.
• Attach one printed page from the website that lists information about your topic.
