What are some key differences between the English and Spanish when looking at their relationship with Blacks and freedom?

For nearly 300 years, Florida was an important territory for the Spanish Empire. While it mainly served as a “buffer zone” between the French and English colonies, as time progressed, it also became an important frontier and borderland for enslaved people looking for freedom.

Although we often think of America’s past through the lens of the British, if are to truly understand our country’s rich history, we cannot forget about the role that the Spanish played in shaping parts of the American South and West.
