STEP 1: Take a look at your Preliminary Bibliography. Which five of your ten Pre Bib sources do you think have the best potential for answering these questions: How did my topic become controversial? Who is affected by this controversy/this situation? What opposing views exist on the topic? What specific support will help me argue my position? (That last question may be guesswork if you don’t already have a solid opinion on the situation.)
STEP 2: Copy and paste those five source citations to a new document–the Annotated Bibliography. (If your bibliography required revisions, make those corrections now. Format your paper like this Sample Annotated Bibliography. Also, take time to read the sections of this sample as you work through the steps below.
STEP 3: Start with the article in your bibliography you think you understand best. This will help you gain confidence as you begin. You begin by writing a summary of the source. Simply, in just a few sentences, tell your reader what the article was about. This is not the place for details, quotes, or even your opinion.
STEP 4: Now, write an analysis of the source. You do this by analyzing the article according to the TRAAP testquestions. This does not mean you will answer every question. Write complete sentences, which means, do not simply provide yes/no answers. You should only answer the questions that are relevant to what the source means to your individual research. Again, read the sample provided.
STEP 5: Lastly, write a reflection. Reflection is an important critical thinking skill. You demonstrate here that you can examine the source for its specific value/usefulness to your paper. Will you be able to use the source in your argument paper? How? Be as specific as possible. This helps a researcher keep track of discoveries–especially when dealing with many sources at one time.
STEP 6: Revise, edit, proofread, submit your work. Do you need to add transitions between the sections of the annotations? Check the Annotated Bibliography grading criteria for your accuracy.
