As always, your second post should be your own work and based on your reading and interpretation of the assigned readings for the week. While you can obviously read the posts that have been submitted before you add your comments, you should prepare your answers before you read someone else’s remarks. Simply repeating someone else’s findings ultimately hurts everyone because a lot of important information is missed and incorrect answers get repeated without reflection. I will read these posts in the order they are submitted, and second ones that are too similar to preceding ones will receive significantly fewer points.

According to your textbook, what were the impetuses behind the burst of imperialism in the second half of the nineteenth century? (Ferry actually addresses a couple of them in his speech.) Why did this wave occur when it did? Why was there also a widespread belief in places such as France and Great Britain that it was the “duty” of Westerners to civilize “inferior” peoples. (Where did this idea come from? Was it something new at the end of the nineteenth century?) What was Social Darwinism? Which European countries dominated the process of overseas expansion in the late 1900s? What problems led the Europeans to hold a conference in Berlin in 1884-85? What were its consequences?
