I will evaluate your paper based on your understanding of the conflict, factual objectivity, balance of the analysis, knowledge of conflict dynamics, a clear thesis statement, the organization of your paper (clear structure), research, support of your opinions, and assessments, and writing (English, editing and scholarly apparatus). You should build your paper around the points you want to make, integrate various sources of a far-reaching manner into your discussion, and summarize, analyze, explain, and evaluate source materials rather than only reporting them. The main sections of your paper comprise an introduction, content paragraphs, conclusion, bibliography, and appendix (if relevant). For your academic citation, APA format, 7th edition is required. You should parenthetically cite any terms and concepts used. However, you must also incorporate support and use course materials to validate and corroborate your ideas, opinions, and assessments, including the appropriate in-text citation. It would be best if you paraphrased instead of using direct quotes from the course material. Your paper should utilize double-spacing 12 font Times New Roman or Calibri. You do not tally the headings, in-text citations, or the bibliography page in your word count. Submit your written reflection in a word document format to the labeled drop box folder on the course nexus site by the due date, 11:59 PM. Your paper should be 2000 – 2500 words, about seven to eight pages. Use the labels of your outline as subheadings in your paper. Also refer to the course syllabus- Additional assessment notes. I will discuss the research project during class.
* Conflict Assessment: Analysis of your Case
I. Nature of the Conflict (I.e., Are there specific triggering events? How do assumptions by the parties play a role in the conflict)
II. Orientation to the Conflict (I.e., What are the attitudes towards conflict; is cultural context a factor)
III. Interests and Goals (What are the interests and goals of the parties? What goals collide? Are there any overlapping goals?)
IV. Power (I.e., how did power play a role in the conflict)
V. Styles (I.e., what are the communication styles of the parties and what role do these styles play in the case)
VI. Emotions (to what extent do emotions play a role in the conflict? Explain)
VII. Interactions & Overall Patterns – Micro and Macro Mapping (Chapter 7) might apply. However, for many of the cases you will work on, a theoretical model from the course (or outside material) is most relevant for this area. Examples of models from the course include Conflict Escalation (Module 2); Dugan’s Nested Paradigm model (Module 3) or J. P. Lederach Progression of Conflict Model (Module 3).
VIII. Attempted Solutions – Have the parties attempted ways to resolve the conflict? What are some of their attempted solutions? I.e., did the parties engage in a negotiation or use third-party intervention? (Note: If you are using a theoretical model, you may want to incorporate this area VII above).
IX. Forgiveness and Reconciliation – Cover to the extent that forgiveness and reconciliation applies in your case.
X. Agreement –
a. Did the parties or groups reach an agreement? Explain the specific agreement. (I.e., what is the context of the type of outcome(s) – Conflict resolution, conflict management or conflict transformation).
b. How durable is the agreement? – I.e., is it a compromise; win/lose; sustainable solution?
c. Explain a process that may better assist the parties in resolving outstanding issues. In your explanation, incorporate a course model – i.e., An integrated Framework – Peacebuilding by J. Lederach, or another theoretical model gleaned from research or from the course.
