The subject of domestic terrorism in the United States is arguably a study in idiosyncratic political violence. Indigenous terrorist groups often reflect the American political and social environments during historical periods when extremists have chosen to engage in political violence, including this current one with “lone-wolf” terrorists and resurgent rightist groups.
In the modern era, left-wing and right-wing political violence has often grown from different circumstances. Leftist violence evolved from an American social environment that produced the civil rights, student rights, Black Power, and New Left movements. Rightist violence has grown out of a combination of long-standing racial and nativist animosities, combined with modern applications of religious and anti-government ideologies. In the early years of the new millennium, threats continued to emanate from right-wing anti-government and racial supremacist extremists, while violence from leftist extremists remains low in comparison with the right.
Respond to the following:
In your considered opinion, what is the likelihood that the current resurgence of American rightist terror movements will continue? Explain with evidence.
Similarly, what is the likelihood of a resurgence in violent leftist movements on the scale of those in the 1960s and 1970s?
In your view, what can and/or should be done to stop such violent movements from accelerating?
